The other day one of our friends, Vijay was getting married in India. He is a catholic. He married a hindu girl Poonam. These guys do have quite a fun and sporting spirit. They have literally got married to each other 3 times in one year. Now thats true commitment!
To start with, they got married in the US (where they live) with a simple registered marriage. They had a reception dinner for friends and family in San Francisco. Second, they planned a trip to India to do the Great Big Indian Wedding version(s) of it. This spilled over an entire week starting with the wedding in Hindu style and then a weekend wedding in church.
That brings me to the point of this blog post (in my usual rambling fashion). Hari and I went to attend the church wedding. Although I have wanted to attend one for several years, this had been the first one I made it to. As a young girl, I always wanted to get married in a white gown with a veil. I also dreamt of having Christmas trees at home every year and singing as part of the choir in church. Funny thing was, at the age of 8 or so, I thought I was one of those special people who wanted to find their own religion and their own calling. Then, in a few years, I realized my sister obsessed about a white wedding as well. And so did a number of my friends.
I couldnt figure out if it was the convent education of the advent of cable TV which meant watching Hallmark and HBO type english movies which romanticized the chirch wedding no end. Anyway, many years later, I was married in traditional Tamil style. I always wondered though if all Hindu girls kind of dreamt of having a church wedding! Sort of like...the grass is greener on the other side....
I looked over to Sejal ( another friend of ours) at Vijay's wedding and whispered asking her what she thought of my theory and whether she had ever dreamt of getting married in a church. She gave me quite a pitying look almost as if she was thinking to herself...Geez Maya, how weird!
