After a period of a year and a half, I was going to visit California on a business trip. After having lived there for 5 years and then moved to France, Singapore and then India, I guess it should naturally feel more familiar than any place. But it freaked me out when I knew exactly at what point on 880S freeway, I should move to the right most lane, to avoid a traffic pile-up.
Anyway, it was such a thrill to meet all of Hari and my friends who we have known on average for 7 years. I realized how life was progressing on their end and how they were all getting hitched or buying houses. I guess life for Hari and I is moving on as well....Us moving to India, starting to look for a place to buy, etc
I mis-calculated Rathish (a.k.a Rats') birthday yet again but still I should be triumphant as it was only by one day this time around rather than 4-6 months as it has been on occassion in the past.
The other cool thing was that I was back to driving (hehe I got a convertible from the rental company) and living the California life :-). Everyone asked me if I felt like I wanted to come back to California for good. The answer for me is still No. I am happy in Mumbai. It has its frustrations and it has its comforts (just as California did) but it is a choice of which comforts I wanted in this case.
To be honest, only time will tell if our decision was the right one for us.
Time will breed familiarity (as much familiarity as California holds for us today) and build memories and more. For now, we are happy to be back as we plunge into life, joys and frustrations of life in Mumbai.
